The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall is a captivating tale set in a fantasy world where a young gender-fluid pirate named Flora rescues a captive mermaid, Evelyn, from a cruel imperial ship. As they navigate the treacherous seas together, their fates become entwined with a secretive witch, the mysterious Lady Blaine, who has her own agenda. The story explores themes of identity, freedom, and the power of love amidst a backdrop of politics and magical adventure, culminating in a narrative that challenges societal norms and celebrates the strength found in unlikely alliances.

One of the most compelling aspects of The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea was its richly crafted characters, each with their own depth and complexity. Flora's journey of self-discovery as a pirate navigating a world of rigid identities was very empowering, while Evelyn's longing for freedom and acceptance tugged at the heartstrings. Lady Blaine's enigmatic presence added an air of mystery and intrigue. However, there were moments where I wished for a bit more exploration of certain plot points or deeper development of secondary characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys immersive fantasy worlds, intricate character dynamics, and stories that challenge conventional norms. It's a captivating book that will stay in your thoughts long after you've turned the final page.
