Patrick Rothfuss’s book, The Name of the Wind, is a wonderful book that takes you through the path of the maturing Kvothe. Although the book starts slow, the pacing after the first fifty pages is wonderful. The whole setting of the book, and the story within the story makes for an extra layer that is very welcomed. Having Kvothe tell his story of his past, begins a great dynamic of switching between the present time in the inn, and his past story.
The best part of the story is the way Rothfuss is able to tell a story. The Music scene where he is earning his pipes is wonderful, and manages to keep readers very interested. Along with the great “in the moment” writing, Rothfuss adds a great love dynamic with Denna, as every dialogue and meeting between the characters is always interesting.
The story's dynamic is similar to that of Harry Potter as it takes place at a university where the main character is forced to balance his hobbies, classes, and enemies. His rivalry with Ambrose never leaves a dull moment, along with his friendship with Wil and Sim. Rothfuss does an amazing job showing how Kvothe learns to make choices and not let them tear him apart.
Overall it is a fantastic book that I would recommend to anyone that enjoys Harry Potter and wants a step up in the reading difficulty level. Five Stars.
