At the start of the book we are introduced to a young baseball player named Roy Hobbs. He is an up-and-coming baseball prodigy with many scouts and professional players looking his way. Then unexpectedly the woman whom he is with shoots him which injures him badly. This sets back his career for more than a decade. Now, Roy faces trials and tribulations as he has to go through a baseball career as the oldest rookie in the league. Throughout his time, he starts to make friends both good and bad that impact him as a person and a player. He eventually gets his shot at the big leagues and does not disappoint. He leads his team strongly with many wins but he lacks social skills which will uproot all of his successes and lead to his downfall.

I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars for a couple of different reasons. I think it was fascinating but I did not enjoy how it was written. It felt very all over the place at times but still a manageable read. My favorite part was the message of being the underdog and never giving up. Roy showed a lot of resilience and never quit even when the times were tough. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys sports and/or books that have many surprises and plot twists.
