In Number the Stars by Lois Lowry, a ten-year-old girl named Annemarie Johansen lives in Denmark during World War II. As Germans take over Denmark, they begin to “relocate” all Jews. Annemarie’s friend Ellen is Jewish, so the Johannsen’s take in Ellen and pretend she is their daughter. As the German soldiers become suspicious, they move to Annemarie’s uncle’s home in the countryside. Annemarie must be brave and help keep her friend out of danger.
This is a story of love, bravery, courage, and family. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a simple read, but the author does a great job of painting a vivid picture of characters and the setting. Annemarie is portrayed as such a brave, caring, and courageous individual. She was able to understand many important and dangerous issues around her despite being so young. I think the story this book helped explain was that anyone can be a hero. Annemarie was able to deliver an important package that helped keep her Jewish friend safe when escaping to go to Sweden. I think this is a great book for all, and would recommend it to young readers who want to get into reading historical fiction. I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars.
