Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, has finally finished fighting in the ten-year war in Troy, and now must begin his journey home. His family awaits his return, refusing to believe he is dead. His wife Penelope refuses to marry again, and his son Telemachus, who was only a baby when Odysseus left, is now an adult. At their palace, hundreds of suitors try to persuade Penelope to remarry so that they can gain the crown. Odysseus has been prevented from returning home by hosts of gods, monsters and other beasts. The goddess of wisdom, Athena, is his protector, and she finally begs her father Zeus, the king of the gods, to let him return home. As someone who has always loved Greek mythology, The Odyssey was a book that I always wanted to read. I enjoyed how it was written, the poetry of Homer’s epics is something that I found a little bit confusing, but it was very beautiful to read. The story itself is easy enough to understand, and to me, the tale of how Odysseus finally reached his home and got back to his wife after 20 years is one of the greatest love stories of all time. For anyone who likes Greek mythology or is interested in mythology in general, this is a pretty good read. As someone who was very much into books like the Percy Jackson series, I found this book to be very exciting.
