Once Upon A Broken Heart is the first installment of its namesake series by Stephanie Garber. Evangeline Fox is a young girl desperate to save her lover from what she believes to be a cursed and false marriage. She prays to the magical Prince of Hearts in order to get what she seeks. However, she doesn’t quite get what she expected. She ends up married to Prince Apollo of the Magnificent North, and is constantly at odds with the Prince of Hearts himself, Jacks. Jacks proves to be infuriating to Evangeline and she is always fighting with him about something. As it so happens, Evangeline’s new husband ends up dead, and she and her stepsister Marisol are fighting much more than ever before. Nothing seems to be going Evangeline’s way. She has to resort to Jacks and her deal with him to help her, and they go on a series of adventures that ultimately leads to Evangeline being right where she started. Alone, in the palace with no trust towards Jacks, even though she felt some strange pull to him. I give this book four stars because I really liked it. Jacks is an absolutely hilarious character, and his development is some of the best. Evangeline’s growth is also very admirable. The descriptiveness of this book is rather impressive, and the universe draws you in more than you could ever imagine.
