Cantor has waited his whole life to leave his mentor and become a protector of all the realms. But he quickly realizes after he steps through his first portal that his job will be incredibly dangerous and difficult. The realms are plagued by crime and cruelty and even the members of the noble Realm Walkers Guild can not be trusted. To make matters worse, his first assignment to find with a dragon to help him has led him to one that will not leave him alone and is clearly not up to the task. With the help of new friends, he needs to uncover the secrets of the corrupt guild before they become too powerful to be stopped.
The beginning of this story is slow going. I didn't get lost in the world till around the 100th page. When Cantor first meets Bridger, I was immediately sold on this original relationship between dragon and boy. The awkward interactions between the two will have you grinning while you read, and this relationship carried the entire story for me.
Now to my biggest complaint: the ending fell apart. I was waiting for Cantor and Bridger's relationship to move to the next level, but it never did. The ending is a huge cliff hanger, and I'd be alright with that, but I can't be satisfied without some sort of resolution. It felt like I read half a novel. Not a single plot line was wrapped up.
While I did have my grievances with the book, I do see potential here. The next book in the series may just wrap up everything up wonderfully.
People who liked Eragon and other dragon books will enjoy this fun read.
