The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton is a classic coming-of-age novel. In this book, Ponyboy finds himself caught
up in the middle of a few too many conflicts. Ponyboy is a greaser, and being a greaser isn’t easy. He
knows he can depend on his brothers and the gang and not to trust the socs. When Ponyboy’s friend,
Johnny, kills a soc in self-defense, the two boys are forced to run. Being a greaser means the police
aren’t on your side. Tensions rise between the greasers and socs, and with the murder still hanging over
his head, Ponyboy starts to wonder if everything he once believed is true. With the help of Cherry and
Johnny, Ponyboy begins to realize he isn’t the only outsider. I like the fact that even though this is an
older book, the topic is still relevant. I read this book at school, and it is a not a book that I would have
picked out on my own. However, I still enjoyed the book.
