The Pact, by Jodi Picoult, is a crime and romance fiction novel. Emily and Chris were close childhood friends, who formed a relationship in their teen years. Their families thought they would spend their lives together, until Emily ends up dead and Chris in the hospital one night. The families are shocked to hear that Emily had been shot, even more so when authorities rule it a suicide. The police suggest that Chris shot Emily, leading to a murder investigation. The two families that had been close for the entirety of their kids lives, are torn apart while trying to find the truth. The story gets more convoluted as the truth is revealed. Everyone learns that Emily was pregnant, suggesting another reason Chris may have killed her. Chris is forced to wait in jail as he awaits trial, when he finally admits the truth to his mother.
I absolutely love this story, along with all of the other Jodi Picoult novels I’ve read. This author is really a master of suspense, and she writes some of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen. She has an ability to make every one of her characters seem human and dynamic, she brings up intense moral questions in everything she writes.
