Written in 1993, Parable of the Sower is a piece of speculative fiction that’s set in a post-apocalyptic world of the year 2025. Lauren Olamina is a young African American woman living in a world of constant terror. As California burns due to the effects of climate change and social inequality is at an all time high, Lauren lives in the safe bubble of Robledo, a gated community where she and her family live separately from the chaos outside. However, Lauren is affected by hyper-empathy, and she cannot help but grieve the loss that’s being experienced throughout the world. She develops her own belief system known as “Earthseed” based on the idea that “God is Change,” which is the only lasting truth. When Robledo is attacked by outsiders, Lauren travels outside of the walls of her town, spreading Earthseed to the people she meets to try and rebuild a life. I definitely believe that this book is worth reading, however it isn’t one of my favorites. I felt like it got a bit boring at times, and the story didn’t continue as smoothly as I would have liked. I know that there are other books that continue this one, but I didn’t feel as motivated to read them. While it was extremely interesting to read a book from1993 that’s set in today’s time, I felt the book was paced too slowly in some areas, which contributed to my lack of overall enjoyment.
