What if the grand story of the Odyssey was written from the perspective of his wife, Penelope who was left for twenty-one years? The Penelopiad is a heart-wrenching tale showing the actual truth. The truth that was hidden away to keep the glorious and heroic Odysseus in the spotlight. Songs and backstories scattered throughout the book telling a deeper meaning than what The Odyssey ever showed to its audience.
The Penelopiad was one of the best stories I have ever read, changing the way I saw The Odyssey and Odysseus himself. It showed me what could have really happened if the tale of the heroic Odysseus was true, while also reminding me how long and dreadful those twenty-one years must have been for Penelope. The entire book brought insight and realization to the cruel reality of Greek mythology. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has read The Odyssey.
