“My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage."
After the sudden death of their parents, two sisters move to a sleepy Massachusetts town to live with their eccentric aunts. The family has a secret, an affinity with magic which makes them live town pariahs. Growing up the sisters must learn to work together, as nothing binds people quite like magic.
I liked this book, but to be perfectly honest I only picked it up because of the movie which so dominated my childhood. I preferred the book to the movie, as I really enjoyed Hoffman’s writing methods. They did change quite a bit from the book, so if you’ve seen the movie and are looking for what inspired it, this isn’t it. But I would argue its better and has a more cohesive storyline than the movie. I will say while I enjoyed this book, The Rules of Magic, the prequal, blew me away. I would recommend this book to any magic lovers, but make sure to go read the prequal afterwards (yes it actually makes more sense after). Four out of five stars, a good story and fun read.
