Pride and Prejudice is a story of the Bennet family, set in England. The Bennet family’s offspring are exclusively daughters, which becomes a point of consideration as the parents look to marry off their daughters. With a local ball coming soon, they came upon a chance to find their daughter's wealthy partners who could sufficiently satisfy their needs.
Primarily following the story of Elizabeth Bennet (the second oldest daughter of the Bennets), Austen reminds the reader of the importance of meaningful relationships and reserving judgment of character until one knows the other sufficiently. These broad messages are seen particularly when Elizabeth meets a man named Mr. Darcy. His reserved personality allowed her to assume he was a prideful individual, without considering his character beyond what she saw. Over time, she would come to realize that, and willingly marry him. I enjoyed the storytelling that is traditional in some aspects but still unpredictable and engaging in other aspects of the story. Austen’s usage of words and complication of structure help to intensify the plot, increasing immersion and interest. This work should be experienced by all audiences at some point, whether through the book or movies. Five out of five.
