Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir is an adult sci-fi novel that follows Ryland Grace on his journey to save Earth. Upon waking up from a coma and battling off his lingering amnesia, we follow Ryland as he discovers that he isn’t, in fact, in a hospital, but rather is in space. Ryland is on a mission to save Earth, but he can’t even remember who he is or the fact that his planet and everyone on it is in danger. It’s up to him to figure out his mission and save his planet, before it is too late.
The Pros: Project Hail Mary is genuinely one of the most interesting books I’ve read. I’m not generally interested in science or math, but seeing Ryland’s thought processes and the sheer thought Andy Weir put into every sentence in this novel was so extraordinarily satisfying. Even though this book is fiction, it felt like it was telling the story of something that could actually happen. Numerous times, I found myself simply in awe reading this book, and I never once experienced any boredom.
The Cons: It’s very hard to find anything wrong with Project Hail Mary, but if I had to choose something, it’d be the dialogue. Something about the dialogue between the characters in Ryland’s flashbacks just doesn’t seem real. Even so, this doesn’t truly impact the book altogether, as the main story revolves around Ryland and his journey through space rather than the people in his past.
As a whole, Project Hail Mary was an undeniable five star read for me. I loved the science in this book and it was truly engaging to follow Ryland on his journey to save Earth. Project Hail Mary is such a captivating read and I was genuinely stressed while reading it because I was so invested! Even if you aren’t super big on sci-fi like me, this book is still super enjoyable and it explains things in a way that’s easy to understand. I recommend Project Hail Mary to everyone, especially people who are fascinated by space and those looking for a unique book that’ll keep you thinking with every page you read.
