Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a powerful story following the life of Kambili, a fifteen-year-old girl living in Nigeria. The novel explores many themes, including identity, faith, family, resilience and politics. Kambili lives with her religious and oppressive family, and is required to make painful decisions for survival of both her home-life circumstances as well as her country’s changing political climate. Adichie’s vivid and emotive writing brings to life her heroine’s courageous journey in discovering her inner strength and independence from her social and political environments. The beginning was a bit slow, but as you get to know Adichie’s complex characters and storyline, the novel becomes wildly interesting. In my opinion, this novel is a powerful, thought-provoking and inspiring read
