Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an extremely well written novel in the genre of realistic fiction that follows the life of a girl named Kambili and the struggles she has with her family. This novel is the epitome of a “coming of age” story that masterfully shapes the adolescent struggles for identity and social acceptance but in a setting that pushes these themes to the nth degree. Taking place in poverty-stricken Nigeria, Adichie expertly weaves themes of economic inequality and colonial religion into a story that is both emotionally invigorating and impactful. Though this book was not my favorite personally, its quality both in literary form and story is one of a kind. Personally unsavory because of some thematic disagreements I held with the novel, and its slow start; brilliant literary form and story because of Adichie’s masterful character development that builds into an amazing final climax. For these reasons, this book gets, in my opinion, a 4 out of 5 stars.
