Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is a classical literature novel written in gothic style. The story involves a woman who marries Maxim de Winter, a wealthy man who she knows nothing about. The woman, at first is excited about her marriage, but soon experiences feelings of regret and guilt. She discovers the strong hold that Maxim’s late wife Rebecca had on the people around her. I thought this novel was interesting to read. Though, the first third or so of the book was on the slower side in terms of plot development. Once the plot was revealed, I got through the rest of the book much faster. It was intriguing to read about the impact of Manderley, the mansion house in which they live. Manderley plays a large role in Maxim’s reputation, as the mansion was known for its beauty and ballroom. The best part of the novel was definitely the end. It leaves readers with a certain sense of closure, but also leaves room for speculation too. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy gothic literature.
