The Red Pyramid is the first book in The Kane Chronicles and is written by Rick Riordan. The book follows Carter and Sadie Kane, two siblings who discover their heritage as Egyptian magicians in a world where the ancient Egyptian gods exist. However, as their magical powers starts to attract enemies, they must learn to harness their abilities to save the world. You don’t need any prior knowledge from any other Rick Riordan series (like Percy Jackson or Heroes of Olympus) to read this book, even though they do take place in the same world (as confirmed in some short stories). Just like the Percy Jackson books, Riordan does a great job writing an entertaining novel here too. I love Carter and Sadie Kane as protagonists because of their chemistry as siblings. One is a smart but nerdy guy whose kind of awkward around people while the other is a sarcastic Brit who’s basically a normal teenage girl. Together, they have this love-hate relationship that’s fun to read, especially as their interactions with each other changes as the book goes on. I also love how they’re narrating all of this on an audio recording, because this allows for some creative and hilarious fourth wall breaks that Riordan utilizes very well. The world building is also great, and everything is explained very well, which is nice because it can be a bit confusing at times with all the concepts and technical terms. It’s a really good book that has great characters and gives the readers a breath of fresh air.
