The Republic of Thieves is an political and amazing fantasy novel by Scott Lynch. It follows
Locke and his best friend Jean as they meet Locke’s old flame Sabetha. What follows is a
faceoff as Lock and Sabetha must face off against each other through political maneuvering and
pranks to gain more votes in the Bondsmagi election after Locke was forced to when his life was
saved by one.
This book is my favourite in this series, however it is the most flawed. The backstory plot line of
the early romance between Locke and Sabrina while great was bogged down by weird pacing
and a uneventful plot of a play the Gentlemen Bastards have to do. While the present plot was
about winning election votes, the real focus was over the romance between Locke and Sabetha.
These characters and their interactions is what makes this book great but sort of fillery. Nothing
integral to the overall plot happens until the end of the novel and epilogue meaning that in the
end this novel was a set up for the future novels in the series. I recommend this book and the
series overall to older teens and adults due to the dark themes and swearing. The cursing in
these novels make the dialogue and insults so much more fun to read but definitely are not
suitable for children.
