The second book in the Lunar Chronicles, Scarlet, is a take on the well known tale of Little Red Riding Hood. The main character and namesake is Scarlet, a farm girl living on the outskirts of a small French town. Scarlet’s spunkiness and courageous attitude makes her an almost shockingly dynamic character compared to Cinder from the first book. The mystery of Scarlet’s grandmother’s disappearance, coupled with all the plot setup from the first book aided in intensifying the plot throughout the story. With a second character duo added, this novel is able to switch back and forth between the parallel plot lines as Scarlet searches for her grandmother, and as Cinder learns about her confusing past. I began to appreciate Cinder more as an influential character as she becomes more assertive and learns to trust herself. While I still am ambivalent about Prince Kai, the character development gives me hope that he will develop more of a personality in the following books. I continued listening to the audiobooks of this series read by Rebecca Soler and have found myself doing activities that allow me to keep listening. A narrator can make or break an audio book experience for me, and as such, audiobooks are a resource with which I am quite picky. The energetic way Soler describes action with perfectly timed inflections and reads dialogue with different voices really adds to the quality of the story. I am fully invested in this series and cannot wait to see where the next book takes me!
