Evelyn Hugo, an aging Hollywood star living out her days alone, has decided to share her story. The public hasn’t heard anything from the elusive actress in years, so any bit of information is pounced on. Used to being in the limelight, Evelyn isn’t sure who to give the story to, as she wants the truth depicted, not a dramatization meant to draw in views. She decides on Monique Grant, an unknown magazine reporter with big goals. Monique rises to the task after some back and forth, but eventually they reach an agreement. Monique will tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, in return for full credit on the story. The deal is a good one, guaranteed to make Monique famous and Evelyn seen for who she really was. As the story unravels and chapters are written, Monique discovers her passion for the project, and the sad truth behind the glamorous façade Evelyn has worn for so long.
This book was a wonderful read, and I highly, highly, highly enjoyed it. The plot was good, the story intense and the characters drew me in. Written in mainly flashbacks, the attention to detail of old Hollywood was gorgeous. I was interwoven with the story, and the twists were expected but not foretold. Evelyn’s story was glamorous, but also eye-opening to how the times have changed. Her emotions were palpable throughout the book, which ticked yet another box on my list. I finished this book in record time because I loved it so much, and I definitely recommend it.
