When Monique Grant, a background writer at Vivant gets offered an interview with the Evelyn
Hugo, she’s rather perplexed. Why would such a famous person meet with a writer like her?
A girl who lost her mother at 14, a girl raised up and abused in a small town in Cuba, a girl who
did not know the value she bestowed, turns into the most iconic being of all time. Well, that’s
Evelyn. Born with good looks, she was taken advantage of. She got married to her first husband
as a teenager, with whom she traveled to Hollywood. She took a particular interest in acting and
started acting in small roles. When the audience loved her, mainly for her looks, she got larger
parts in blockbusting films; rather, she got a lot of parts in movies through using her looks. She
divorced her first husband and married another, and another, and another – times seven husbands.
Evelyn intentionally made rumors, broke hearts, and cheated, but only one person remained her
true lover. Her journey through Hollywood was rather bittersweet – and in reality, most of her
true feelings and actions were off camera. No one knows what really happened in Evelyn Hugo’s
life, and now everything was about to be disclosed to Monique for her to write a biography, but
what happens when Monique’s story is actually connected in a way to Evelyn’s? This book had
me engrossed from the beginning! From massive plot twists to the late 1900s nostalgia, I think
this book was a very enjoyable read. There was so much that happened, and I couldn’t help but
think that this fictional character, Evelyn Hugo, as truly iconic – the author did an exceptional job
describing that through her life story. One important thing this novel taught me was that
soulmates are not necessarily lovers. Do keep in mind that there is some explicit content in this
book. Overall, I recommend this book to readers who like all genres because I think this is a
must-read! I give this book a 4.5/5 rating.
