This book is about Yumi Chung, an ambitious comedian. Growing up in a strict Asian household, her parents want her to focus more on helping with the struggling family restaurant and studying for the SSAT. Amid a hard time, Yumi feels her parents can’t relate to her interest in being a comedian. Her sister, Yuri, had dropped out of med school recently to try to find her interests, upsetting their parents. With a twist of fate, however, Yumi mistakenly winds up at a comedy camp. After being falsely recognized as another student, Kay Nakamura, Yumi decides to go along with the lie, believing that it is her only chance to chase her dream. As the truth about her identity unravels, Yumi struggles with admitting the truth, disappointing her parents, and following her passions. I liked the theme of this book. It balances pursuing ambitions and disappointing loved ones. I enjoyed Yumi’s reasoning and journey while aspiring to be a comedian. This book is very relatable in one way or another. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in comedy or following their careers no matter the circumstances. For me, this book is a 5 out of 5!
Stand Up, Yumi Chung!
