Five months ago, PhD student Dani Brown and her best friend had their routine witchy
requests to the universe. Dani, looking for a casual rebound after a failed relationship, wished
the universe would show her who to pursue next. Several months later, when a video of former
pro rugby player turned charity founder and security guard Zafir carrying her out of her
university building goes viral, it seems like a pretty big hint. Except Zafir asks her to fake-date
him in order to continue the publicity for his charity - and when real feelings start arising, Dani’s
fear of commitment and Zaf’s difficult past start to cause issues between them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The romance is sweet, the tropes largely unproblematic,
and the representation amazing. As someone with a Pakistani background myself, it was like a
warm hug to read Zafir’s niece calling him “Chacha”, regular mentions of hijabs, and
exclamations of “Alhamdulillah”. I would recommend this book to any older teen or adult and I
would give it five out of five stars.
