I just finished Tell Me What Really Happened by Chelsea Sedoti, a mystery novel written in the style of four unique characters being interviewed by police about a disappearance that happened the night before. Maylee invited four friends into a spur-of-the-moment camping trip to a creek that is infamous for teenage girls disappearing in it. When Maylee breaks off from the group, the four teens left call the police and are called in for a witness interview. They all have drastically different stories, and the reader is left to decide which one of them is telling a lie about what happened the previous night.
As I was reading this book, I found it difficult to put down. There’s a lot of suspense throughout the book, and it was entertaining and fun to read through the memories of four different teenagers and piece together the differences and similarities of their stories. I’d rate this book a four if it weren’t for the ending. The reason for Maylee's disappearance is revealed, but it’s severely underwhelming and there isn’t much wind-down before the abrupt ending of the book.
This book, however, also touches on the suffering of black men under the rule of police, and also has some mentions of queer characters throughout it. Generally I’d say it's a very interesting read for someone who doesn’t have really high standards of a book, and someone whos maybe in middle school or just starting high school.
