Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Hurston, Coming-of-age fiction

Following a young girl’s journey to find herself in a male-dominated society, this book is somewhat of a love story. This young girl, Janie, moves from relationship to relationship while moving towns in 1930’s Florida. Full of twists and turns, Hurston uses purposeful misspellings to better get that southern feel in the novel. These misspellings, while making the novel difficult to read, contribute to the southern tone of the story overall. I’d recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction with a little love aspect. But I’d also leave the warning that there is some domestic abuse within the novel as well. I’d say that this book is worth the read, despite being somewhat difficult to comprehend.
