“Three dark queens

 Are born in a glen,

Sweet little triplets

Will never be friends

Three dark sisters

All fair to be seen,

Two to devour

And one to be Queen”

Once a generation, triplet girls are born to the queen. Separated from birth and taught the unique type of magic they each possess, they will meet again on their 16th birthday, when they fight to the death for the right to their throne.

I thought Three Dark Crowns had a really cool concept after reading the blurb when it was gifted to me. I was more hesitant after realizing it was a YA book, but I decided to give it its chance and I’m so glad I stuck with it. This book’s concept just has such a wacky and dark feel, I absolutely adored it. The characters are so varied and the lore for their kingdom and history was actually interesting to me, as supposed to the typical dull worldbuilding I sit through for every fantasy novel. I enjoyed the unique perspectives on magic, and most of the characters, though Katherine was most definitely my favorite (likely due to her pet snake which endeared itself to me). There were constant twists and turns and the final reveal at the end of the book had me rereading previous passages to see how I could have missed something so obvious. A very enjoyable read, 5 out of 5 stars.
