The Toll is a young-adult dystopian novel. It is the final book in the Arc of a Scythe trilogy. Set three years after Citra and Rowan’s disappearance, Goddard has taken over the Sycthedom and the Thunderhead has cut itself off from humanity, only communicating with Grayson Tolliver.
The Toll is a good conclusion to the Arc of a Scythe series. It continues the twists and turns of the previous two novels and features the same compelling themes. The writing is still on point, even though it is a bit dragged out. The Toll isn’t as strong as the previous two novels when it comes to pace, however, as it feels like the story trudges along at points and the ending isn’t entirely satisfactory. However, I still enjoyed the novel in spite of its slow parts. I recommend finishing the series if readers have read the first two novels. I rate it four stars.
