Valkyrie, by Kate O’Hearn, is the story of a girl who’s learning that friends come from
unexpected places. Freya is a newly made Valkyrie. On her first reaping, the soldier she
was sent to reap asked her to look after his family, that something bad was happening.
Freya agrees and travels to Midgard, Earth, against the rules. While there she finds a
boy who soon becomes her friend, meets the soldier’s family and tries to help them,
teaches a bunch of misfits to stand up for themselves, and tries to avoid being found by
Odin’s Dark Searchers. I like to read Norse mythology and like books about strong
women. This one seemed to fit both categories. I thought that this was a great book and
would recommend it to any middle grade student looking to get into mythology.
