The War I Finally Won is the sequel to the Newbery Honor winning book The War That Saved My Life. This is a WWII novel following 11 year old Ada as she receives surgery for her clubfoot and learns who she wants to be in a world immersed in war. Ada was always told she was damaged, but since moving in with Susan she’s discovered she can be as capable as anyone. After the London bombings she must move to the countryside where her family stays with friends. As Ada settles into her new home, a German Jewish girl named Ruth comes to live with them. Ada must choose between what she has believed her entire life or creating a new perception of who she is and what she believes in. The War I Finally Won is a book of self discovery, acceptance and development.
This book is a fantastic compilation of both World War II history and character growth. It highlights many of the struggles families faced, and the discrimination present even in places like London. I liked this book because it gave a new perspective and understanding of what WWII looked like and what families worked hard to save. I rated The War I Finally Won four stars for its beauty, compassionate characters and historical accuracy.
