What the Eyes Don’t See is a true story about the Flint water crisis. Dr. Mona, along with a team of parents, friends, families, researchers, and leaders, helped expose a horrifying truth. The citizens of Flint, Michigan were being exposed to deadly levels of lead in their tap water. Their water source had been switched from the Detroit River to the Flint River due to cuts in the city’s budget. The Flint River had once been a toxic waste site and wasn’t being treated with corrosion-controlling chemicals as it was being piped in. Dr. Mona and her team battled their government and broadcasted the evidence. In doing so, they faced numerous setbacks and false government promises while realizing that the government knew about the toxic lead levels the entire time. To try to help in any way they could, the team helped distribute bottled water and raise awareness to protect the citizens. On October 8, the water was switched back to the Detroit River as Mona’s efforts started to make a difference. Corrupt officials lost their jobs and the city received around $200 million in federal aid. This book is a must-read. Dr. Mona displayed bravery as she combated the government to fight for the futures of the children of Flint. I felt that this book was intriguing and I felt inspired as I learned about Dr. Mona’s resilience and efforts. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books about overcoming obstacles or public service activists. This book is a 5 out of 5 for me
