White Bird by R.J. Palacio serves as one of the sequels to Auggie & Me, a book based off of the Wonder series. This book focuses on, Sara, who is Julian’s (Auggie’s main bully) grandmere. Sara grew up in France, which at the time was occupied by Nazi Germany. Sara grew up in a Jewish family that was quite well off. She had a loving family that provided her a good childhood. At school, she had lots of friends and was well known. However, in her class she sat next to Julien, who was disabled and constantly bullied. Sara participated in this bullying and for a long time disregarded him. However, things change when the Germans come for the Jews and Sara ends up being separated from her mother and father. In an act of kindness, Julien is the one who shelters Sara, keeping her away from the Nazis. This completely changes Sara as a person, who becomes more humble and grounded and has learned to appreciate people not for the way they look or smell, but how they act. This book is a wonderful add on to the Wonder series and definitely a must read if you enjoyed reading Auggie and Me and want a more in depth story on Julian’s grandmother.
