The Will of the Many by James Islington follows Vis, an orphan, who with a shadowed past, holds a deep hatred for the Republic. Therefore, he does not cede any “will” to the Hierarchy. When he grasps an opportunity to enroll in a prestigious academy, he hopes to rise through his competition. But his mysterious background and ulterior motives make things more complicated.
While this book is incredible, a small flaw is Vis’s character sometimes feels too perfect. Similar to Darrow from Red Rising, he’s incredibly capable, but Vis rarely seems to struggle with real problems, making him seem distant. Despite this, the story’s unique magic system is one of it’s biggest strengths, and accompanied with its complex world-building and character development, it ranks as one of my all time favorites. I could not recommend The Will of the Many enough!
