A Child Called “it” is a memoir by Dave Pelzer. Dave’s mother was an alcoholic and brutally abused her son. Dave often had to fight for food and was tortured by his mother’s abuse. At first, it didn’t seem too bad, but as his mother’s games got worse, Dave realized that he would have to find a way to take care of himself and find help. I really liked reading this book, and I would definitely recommend it.

TW: Child abuse, violence

Help me, I’ve fallen for this book and I can’t get up.

…I’m sorry. That was cheesy. Now for the real intro: Pet was not something I was expecting to enjoy. I don’t even know where I found out about this gem of a book. I wish I did, if I’m being honest, but after all, it’s not the beginning of the journey that matters, it’s the end result. And Pet delivered.

Fighting Words is written by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. The genre is realistic fiction and it’s about 2 girls, 10 year old Della and 16 year old Suki. Their mother was an addict and had a psychotic break, and their mom’s boyfriend Clifton never treated them right. Both of them are adopted by a woman named Francine, who isn't the nicest person in the world but not a bad person either.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell is a realistic fiction book set in 1986 and follows Eleanor and Park.  Eleanor is a new girl in town and she couldn’t stick out more. Park is the boy in the back of the bus who thinks he’s invisible. But not to Eleanor. The two bond over mixtapes and comics. Even with their mountain of problems, they fall in love, knowing it might not last. Yet they’re brave enough to try. I read this book for school and to be honest, I hated it.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a novel about a 14-year-old girl named Lily, desperate to escape her abusive father and find out about her mother’s long-lost secrets after her death many years ago. It is a compelling love story between women, as it greatly displays divine feminine power. I recommend this book to anybody who truly wants to be inspired by sisterly love and the power of sisterhood.

This novel is great for older teens looking to get into reading. The book I would say is not for anyone younger than high school ages. The book takes a different view on abusive relationships. It allows the reader to understand how it feels to be in a relationship like this and why one might stay in it. It creates a new perspective following Lily’s relationship with her new boyfriend Ryle. An ex of Lily’s comes in the picture challenging their relationship in many ways. The book is written wonderfully with so many surprising moments.
