Beauty Queens follows a simple concept: what if a plane full of beauty queens crash-landed on a deserted island, a la Lord of the Flies?

Except it’s not quite so simple as that. This is the story of the survivors, fourteen typical (and atypical) beauty queens who must work together to stay alive and keep their pageant skills sharp until help arrives.

This book had an incredible story line, and it kept me wanting to read. There were lots of elements to the novel like mystery, love, and humor which made it even more enjoyable. The characters were easy to relate to and very intriguing. I had the same sense of desire that Kira did throughout the book- I wanted to know why things happened, and what about her past led her to her current situation just as much as Kira did. I thought the cover went well with the book because it ties into elements of the novel.

The nation of Panem is a post-apocalyptic version of North America. It consists of 12 poorer districts and the powerful and wealthy Capitol. Early in it’s history, the 13 districts rebelled against the Capitol which resulted in the destruction of the 13th district and, as punishment, an annual televised show called the Hunger Games. Each year, all the districts must choose a boy and a girl to send to the games that are forced to fight to the death, until only one survivor remains to claim victory. When Katniss’ sister Prim is chosen, she volunteers to stand in her place.
