George Takei’s graphic novel They Called Us Enemy is an interesting story of the racial injustices suffered by Japanese-Americans during World War II. It follows Takei’s family as they suffer the effects of Pearl Harbor, the fear of Japanese spying, and the movement of Japanese-Americans into internment camps. Takei frames the story incredibly well and is an incredible book everybody should read. It shines a deep, reflective light on the dangers of widespread fear and paranoia.
Persepolis is a unique book that doesn’t adhere to what is expected in literature. It combines the personality and ease of reading a graphic novel with the depth of a non-fiction book, particularly a memoir. Specifically, this book follows Satrapi’s life as she grows through the Islamic Revolution. As a child, she becomes rebellious and seeks better out of the Islamic government. Later in her life, she keeps some elements but is subdued in others.
Sid Meier's Memoir!: A Life in Computer Games by Sid Meier is an autobiography spanning Sid Meier’s career in the video game industry, starting from the birth of computer games and development on early computers. Then gaining partners and growing the business while producing newer and more modern games, selling more than 51 million copies in his career with his famous Sid Meier’s Civilization. In addition to the history of video games, Sid Meier also shares his perspective and opinions on the industry.
Lion is based on a true story of Saroo Brierley’s journey of finding his way home. The author shares his story of how he got lost on a train when he was only five-years-old and ended up being separated from his family. Later, he was adopted by an Australian family. Eventually, after years of research and effort, Brierly ended up tracking down his biological family using Google Earth and was reunited with them. In my opinion, this is by far one of the most emotional books I’ve ever read.
Born a Crime is a comedic memoir written by Trevor Noah. Trevor Noah is a famous comedian and host of “The Daily Show”, and this collection of stories highlights his experience as a mixed child growing up in apartheid South Africa, a place where it was illegal for races to mix. As a result, Trevor shares the story of a man who lived in a world where he was unwanted, and it results in some amazing life lessons.
Ishmael Bea, as a young child, gets dragged into the war in Sierra Leone. He has nothing to do with it, and he wants nothing with it either. He attempts to escape the war and goes on a journey along the way. He shares his experience on the battlefield when he eventually becomes a child soldier.
