Earth Day on April 22 celebrates our planet and raises ecological awareness. From borrowing materials to exploring everyday resources, Johnson County Library is a sustainable choice that helps our community learn and grow. This year, the Library is celebrating with a themed Walk and Read and a collection that supports curiosity and lifelong learning.
Did you know
- Borrowing books, magazines, CDs and more helps reduce waste and share resources.
- The Friends of Johnson County Library accepts used book donations. These items are sold to fund Library programs, and the reuse and recycling benefits the entire community.
- As libraries reimagine their spaces, many now include natural light, energy-efficient systems and flexible, welcoming environments. Renovations at Spring Hill and De Soto branches, set to reopen in mid-2026, reflect this approach.
- Merriam Plaza Library features a green roof that supports environmental innovation. It helps extend the life of the roof while creating a native habitat. Visitors can view it from the street or from the adjacent parking garage and enjoy a prairie landscape that changes throughout the year.
- The Library regularly hosts book swaps to encourage reuse and community sharing.
Walk and Read
Spend time outdoors and enjoy a story while walking in nature through April 26. Readers of all ages are invited to stroll through Meadowbrook Park in Prairie Village in celebration of Earth Day. This Walk and Read is presented by Johnson County Library and Johnson County Park and Recreation Department.
Two stories will be featured: Earth Day Hooray! by Stuart J. Murphy and The Earth Gives More by Sue Fliess.
This event promotes literacy, physical activity and family time outdoors.
