The Selection by Kiera Cass is a dystopian novel and is the first book in the series. 35 girls are

chosen to compete in the Selection. In a world with a messed up caste system/social system,

the Selection is a chance of a lifetime and gives girls a chance to escape the life they were

given. America Singer doesn’t like the thought of competing for the crown though. When

America is forced to compete for the sake of her family, now living in the castle, she finds out

Synopsis: Bilbo Baggins’s ring is more powerful, and much more dangerous, than

Gandalf had previously thought. The ring has been shown to be the One Ring of Sauron, the

Dark Lord. As Bilbo leaves it behind and goes on an eternal vacation into the wild, Gandalf

entrusts the ring to Frodo, Bilbo’s nephew and adoptive heir, and warns him not to put it on.

Later, Gandalf finds that Sauron has come back to power in Mordor, and his nine Ringwraiths

are after the ring and the ringbearer. Frodo must embark on an epic quest with a Fellowship put

The Selection is a dream for most girls. It’s a time to escape your given caste,

to try and win over the heart of Prince Maxon. And even if the prince doesn’t

pick you to be his bride, you still had the time of your life at the palace.

But America Singer never wanted that. She didn’t ever need anything fancy

to be happy. Now America has to leave behind her whole life to go to the

palace, including Aspen, who she shared a secret – but serious – relationship

Cassandra “Cassie” Hobbes has a gift. She can describe a person’s personality by

what they wear, what type of car they drive, or even how they act on a video. She has

known about this gift, however she didn’t know how powerful it could become, until

Micheal shows up on behalf of the FBI, recruiting her to use her gift to solve cold

cases for the FBI. Cassie’s mom was murdered 5 years ago and her father is very

distant, so she takes the chance and heads to Washington D.C. to join the naturals

Raina is a nervous kid bites her nails and tends to stress over everything. When 5th

grade starts, Raina finds out that she is scared of throwing up. Sbe has to see a therapist and

she doesn’t tell any of her friends because she doesn’t want them to think she is weird. When

Raina’s enemy ends up in the hospital, she must decide if she wants to make things right. I

enjoyed this graphic novel because it was funny and had a good message. My favorite part is

when Raina gets her own room. I would recommend this book to 5th graders.

Strike the Zither was an amazing read that had multiple plot twists I didn’t see coming. I love

how the author incorporated Chinese history, and the portrayal of Chinese culture was very well

done. For a majority of the book, I could not put it down. There were other parts that did drag a

bit for me, which is why it is four and not five stars. This story is also gender swapped, meaning

In this third iteration of the twelve books in the Ranger’s Apprentice series, we get to see the

formation of the greatest power duo that the literary world may have ever been faced with:

Horace and Halt. This book is an interesting new style from the author where it switches back

from a princess and a ranger stuck in slavery (their names are Will and Evanlyn: I hope you can

tell which one is the princess) and a prince stuck with a former battleschool student (just kidding,
