Your Library: Get Ready for National Library Week

Find Your Joy!

It’s the thrill of finding a forgotten twenty-dollar bill in your pocket. The joy of finally taking that dream vacation. The comfort of a warm cuddle from a beloved pet. That’s the kind of excitement Johnson County Library is feeling as we celebrate National Library Week.

National Library Week, April 19-25, is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities.

This year’s theme, “Find Your Joy,” invites people to explore and discover what sparks joy in them at the Library. Maybe it’s discovering a really good book you can’t put down, finding the resources you need to learn new skills or volunteering to help others.

The Friends of Johnson County Library are helping kick things off with a series of special events. Music BINGO at Servaes Brewing Company on April 15 offers a lively night out, followed by a Members-Only Night at the Book Nook on April 16. Readers can also join the monthly Banned Books Book Club, where discussions center on titles from the American Library Association’s most frequently challenged lists. These events highlight the role libraries play in supporting intellectual freedom while building community connections.

The week also includes special days that shine a light on different aspects of library service. National Library Workers Day recognizes the dedicated staff who keep everything running smoothly. This is a great time to say thank you to the people who make library service possible.

National Library Outreach Day celebrates the work that happens beyond library walls. Through partnerships and local initiatives, staff bring services directly into the community, ensuring access for those who may not be able to visit a branch. Services include:

  • Justice Involved: Supports individuals who are currently or previously involved with the justice system by connecting them with library resources that support learning and personal growth.
  • Educators: Provides teachers, childcare providers and school staff with tools and materials that enhance classroom learning.
  • Language Learners: Helps community members who are learning English – or any new language – access classes and support.

Take Action for Libraries Day rounds out the week with a call to support the future of libraries. Advocacy can take many forms, from becoming a Friend of the Library to making a donation or by sharing how you use your library with others.

Of course, the best way to celebrate is by using Johnson County Library itself. There are countless ways to get involved year-round. You can:
