Lois Lowry’s dystopian novel, The Giver, is a book set in the future. The “utopian” society is one without pain, illness, suffering, or any bad things that are seen in the world today. Jonas, eleven, is selected for a job as a receiver, a rare job that requires him to hold and receive the memories of past lives. Although society has no pain or suffering, it also lacks happiness, and joy. The memories that Jonas receives, show him the beauty of joy, but also open his eyes to the pain.
Cold The Night, Fast the Wolvesis a book written by Meg Longabout survival. The book is about a 17-year-old named Sena who runs away with her wolf named Iska and how they encounter difficult challenges to get away from everyone else and get off the planet. I honestly thought this book was rather good. Even though I am not a huge fan of books where characters are supposed to somehow survive, I really thought this book changed my mind on that.
All That’s Left in the World is a survival book written by Erik Brown. The book is about two teens in a world where a super flu killed most of the world, and everyone else needed to find a way to survive. It was great to see how far they came, from Jamie pulling the gun at Andrew when he first came to loving each other. The author did an excellent job of showing how ruined and lonely the world was after the super flu and how everyone died.
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi is a wonderfully written novel that follows teenager Juliette Ferrars and her journey through a tumultuous world. Juliette was born with a lethal touch. Anyone she touches experiences immense pain and eventually dies. The book starts with Juliette imprisoned inside a mental asylum. She then is introduced to one Adam Kent, who is a soldier. They are imprisoned together, and there is one thing that shocks Juliette to her core- her touch doesn’t hurt him.
Armada by Ernest Cline is a sci-fi novel that follows Zack Lightman, a teenage gamer who discovers that the video game he excels at, "Armada," is actually a government simulation training players to defend Earth against an impending alien invasion. When the threat becomes real, Zack and other top players are recruited to use their gaming skills in a battle for humanity’s survival.
Space Case, a gripping novel by Stuart Gibbs, follows 12-year-old Dashiel Gibson as he delves into the mysterious death of Ronald Holtz, a fellow resident on the moon. The intriguing lunar setting, and well-developed characters make the story truly engaging. The fast-paced plot adds to the suspense, making the novel even more thrilling.
Geekerella is a realistic fiction book written by Ashley Poston. It also happens to be the first book in the Once Upon a Con series. The book revolves around Elle Wittimer, a girl who lives with her step-monster and two stepsisters. Her only escape is a show called Starfield, and yet, now even her favorite show is about to be ruined. She has been patiently waiting for the cast decisions in the new live-action remake-and that excitement falls flat on its face.
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is a post-apocalyptic novel that intertwines the lives of several characters before, during and after a flu pandemic wipes out most of the world's population. The story centers on a traveling theater troupe that performs Shakespearean plays for the scattered survivors. Exploring themes of art, memory and the importance of human connections in a world where civilization has collapsed.
In The Darkest Minds, we meet a sixteen year old Ruby Daly, who is lives in a world where the only children still alive after the disease, are teenagers with uncontrollable, and some times dangerous abilities. She and other kids plagued with this curse were sent to abusive “rehabilitation camps” put together by the government to separate them from society.
